THE DOG THAT TRAINED ME!
Shelby's Story
Shelby was adopted while I lived in beautiful Marin County, California in the late '90s. She is a Border Collie/Chow mix (seen here at about eight weeks old, romping in the hills above the fog of San Francisco Bay in the background).
Shelby taught me very quickly the oddly humorous way that an untrained puppy can give direct clues to the way an untrained human mind works. She was a blissed-out puppy, filled with fun and mischief. She was very frisky and nosy about everything, quick to lick a friendly face but also just as quick to yap-yap-yap at unknown noises or humans moving around inside "her territory" -- until, of course, she discovered they were no real threat and were, therefore, included in her world with loving affection.
Shelby would regularly surprise other dog-walkers... people who easily remembered Shelby's name but not mine. They wanted to know what breed she was, thinking her good manners were somehow due to superior genetics. The fact is, Shelby's behavior had very little to do with genetics but rather in the way was trained properly, always applying loving kindness and persistently positive attitudes and "good energy." SPECIAL NOTE: You may already be aware that, like knowledgeable dog trainers everywhere, dogs will "pick up" human energy and reflect it in their behavior -- particularly that of their master (as pack leader). Logically, therefore, if a dog's master has an aggressive attitude or other negative emotions, the dog will likely behave in the same way.
Shelby, to no one's surprise, is now a happy, beloved, well-behaved pooch who is always welcomed wherever she goes... petted and loved by all who meet her.
